Is it possible to invoke the full screen gallery album from a link in the sidebar menu instead of having to open the gallery album page and click on a thumbnail image?

Anyway to open lightbox from link, you can try adding custom link in menu with something like this: http://192.168.1.2/wordpress/thirteen/archives/album/your-album?gallery_item=1 So it is link to your album + this string at end ?gallery_item=1

Yes, just link album in your menu :-) First you need to activate album options in menu, as explained here in docs http://apollo13.eu/docs/thirteen/#!/adding_menu (3rd screen shot)
Unless you mean somethink else, like opening lightbox right from link:-)
