Hi,
is there a way to add a gallery to a widget ? i would like to add the portfolio gallery to the hidden sidebar.

Hello:-)
In upcoming WordPress 4.9 they will add gallery widget, so it should be possible then.
For now, you can only experiment with shortcodes.
