404 Hard Coded?

in Rife Posts: 87
Hi

Do you have a 404 hard coded somewhere?

I have a new 404 page but its impossible to set the URL to 404 as its obviously finding a duplicate somewhere else it wants to use 404-2.

Have cleaned the whole database and elementor same issue.

Thanks

    Hey :-)

I have checked on your installation and this file taken "404" slug https://metta3.vip/wp-admin/post.php?post=13892&action=edit

You can try to edit this slug, then rename your page slug again. If that will not help, delete this file and try then.

Maybe in future WordPress will better inform which post has taken slug :-)

    With kind regards.

    Hi

Thanks a lot for looking but sadly same issue. Deleted this file and renamed 404 page and tried to create a new one it still thinks there is a 404 somewhere as its adding the 404-2 slug!!!

Changes made on dev site you have the login for..

A question - I see theres a 404.php script as part of the theme that displays a 404 message - is there anything in the php??

Usually deleting trash and cleaning revisions fixes this but no luck

    Thanks

Yes, I agree - I always advise same solution for stuck slugs. Let me dig deeper in your installation. I will reply soon.

This is not theme blocking this - you can check this by switching to different theme ;-)

    With kind regards.

I am not 100% sure yet, but there is a chance that 404 slug is reserved by WordPress and cannot be taken. I am checking this still, but there is a huge chance for that.

    I will keep you updated.

I think I have found confirmation, but it is not issue with "404" being blocked, but number slug being not allowed https://wordpress.org/support/topic/404-redirecting-to-404-2/

That is probably why Daniel renamed it in some demos to "error404".

    Learning something new every day:-)

    mmm! How weird. Thanks

Okay that explaings the issue - how do I get the custom 404 page to show? Can I call this in a script??

At the moment - theres a 404 message that shows that I guess comes from the php script?
