404 errors in GSC - can not clean demo links

Hi,

our site went live a week ago and when I checked GSC it showed some 20 404 errors.

Searched the database and found that there are several links left in the database like this - http://bronx.fatmoon.kinsta.com/?page_id= - that I haven't been able to remove with any of the WP sweeper/cleaner plugins.

Please help us to get rid of them.
Thanks,
Tamas

    Hello there:-)

Links that you refer to are guids of posts, you can read more about theme here https://deliciousbrains.com/wordpress-post-guids-sometimes-update/ and get more info how to edit them.

Please reply later were you able to do it.

    With kind regards.
  • Thanks for your quick reply, but, pls check this screenshot. The database is full of these kind of references: http://127.0.0.1/apollo13/?post_type=vc_grid_item&p=2308

I migrated several WP sites from staging or localhost to live, but never seen these bogus codes that are mostly created by VC.

The above is left in the database by you and I kindly ask you to help me to clean it up as soon as possible.

    Thanks

Sorry but I didn't mess in your database ;-)

Have you checked what I told in previous post? Link I gave explains what are these fields in database. If you will view it, with phpmyadmin you will see it is in "guid" field.

These "links", or rather guids are created when post/page is created, and are mostly not changed during import, so they have original address of creation in them.

You can safely search and replace all these links, or look for tool to do it for you https://www.google.com/search?q=replace+guid+wordpress

Please see this screen shot of my database, to see that these "links" just depends on where originally post/page was created.

That is quite different process then importing demo data, so they can't be compared like so.
Migration from staging have very advance search and replace mechanics build in, as it is core of what staging have to do to give you its power.

    With kind regards.

  • Hmm,

I am not telling that you messed our database. All I say is that the Posts database table contains many rows that can not be cleaned and some of them has nothing to do with our staging site, they just left there causing SEO issues, i. 404 errors.

See the attached 404-fatmoon-vc-grid.jpg for example.
We have licensed the template on 18th Nov. 2016 and it contains rows with the time stamp from February, the same year.

They are obsolete and should be removed somehow, not replaced, removed I emphasize.

Now have a look at the bronx-fatmoon-issue.jpg screenshot which is the frontpage of my client's site and the guid contains this http://bronx.fatmoon.kinsta.com/?post_type=album&p=8412
If I replace the "bronx.fatmoon.kinsta.com" with the live domain I get a page that is not part of our site.

So, back to the initial request. How do I eliminate 404 errors in GSC? How can I remove these non existent URLs that came with the demo content from our live site?

OK with those screen shots you have confirmed that it happens in GUID column.

    1. What is GSC that you refer all the time?
    2. Have you checked links I gave you to understand that this guid can't cause 404 erros?
    3. If you have 404 errors on your site, then they are not connected to guid, but you probably have links in your content to our server. We have recently moved our demos to new domain, so old links like http://bronx.fatmoon.kinsta.com/ will not work anymore and can cause 404 errors.

Most important: we have to distinguish between 404 errors and what is in GUID columns cause these things are not connected.

If you will show me actual 404 errors I can help you hunt them down.

If you want to search in database for wrong links look for string "bronx.fatmoon.kinsta.com"(without http) cause VC code links differently.

Even better look only for "fatmoon.kinsta.com", and concentrare on column post_content cause there might be some backgrounds that were still linked to our server and was not changed by you after import.

vc_grid elemnets are pretty important for site to work if you use Visual Composer to build your site. So don't delete them please:-) However don't worry about guids - they don't harm you.

Sooner or later we will sort it out together:-)

    With kind regards.
