Beach please page background

Hello, I purchased your great theme today and I've been playing around with it. I can't work out how to get the pages looking like the example here: http://themes.apollo13.eu/bp/layout-center/ or here: http://themes.apollo13.eu/bp/layout-left/

I've tried setting a background colour, but it's just a block colour: http://www.davidjmarriott.com/writing/ and not the lovely gradient effect you have in your example. What am I doing wrong?
