Full-width template

Hi: I'm trying to make a full-width template in my child theme, but can't seem to figure it out. It looks like there's some CSS, etc. for a full-width page (the 404 is one) but I can't figure out how to make that info work for a new template. I tried a template-specific override of the article class, but I couldn't get that to work. Help?
