One icon portfolio item and SEO

If I want to keep only the icon to enlarge the picture in a pop up screen, is it going to impact the search engine optimization? Will google still be able to find out about individual work items pages?

Nope, there are still links to your work(title of your work for example). Besides Google know wordress very good, it will manage.
