How to create a set of images (gallery) that behaves like portfolio?

In your theme you have portfolio pages that can have several sets (works/series), displayed as thumbnails, so when o click on some, you get to the actual set/serie where all the photos are displayed from top to bottom.
Is there a way to make a set of images behave and have the same styling as portfolio, that is, display its images in several rows and pop them out in larger size oh click?

there is no option for that right now.
