Child Theme question.
I thought when using the child theme the layout of e.g the navigation and it's menus would stay the same as it was configured in the main template - you would then be able to make changes without editing the original code. This is not the case?

It is not our choice, this how wordpress acts. There is logic in it, as child theme is just new theme, and case that it depends on existence of other theme has nothing to do with it, as it can have different names and places for Menus( as in this case) or other elements.
